LOSS ON IGNITION (LOI):When a clay or mineral is strongly heated (1000°), the carbonates are burned off. When this occurs there is a change in the weight of the material. This change in weight, or loss on ignition, is expressed as a percentage of the dry weight.

PYROMETRIC CONE EQUIVALENT (PCE):A term which is used to determine how refractory a material is. PCE is determined by firing test materials with cones. The cone nearest the softening temperature of the material is the PCE.
